In celebration of the famous sitcom’s almost 40th anniversary, ABC Signature has teamed up with Fathom Events to bring many fan favorites to cinemas for two days in September for a special event dubbed Forever Golden! The Golden Girls are being honored. The first showing will take place in cinemas on Sept. 14, 36 years after the comedy series originally aired on television, followed by a second screening on Sept. 21.
It’s unclear which episodes will be shown during the occasion, but most major fans will be delighted to see the main women together on the big screen. Cynthia Fee’s “Thank You for Being a Friend,” the series’ famous theme tune, is also well-known. Hearing that song live in the theater will be worth the price of admission for certain fans. The Golden Girls have long reigned supreme on television, but seeing them in cinemas will be a whole different experience.

The series starred Bea Arthur as Dorothy Zbornak, Betty White as Rose Nylund, Rue McClanahan as Blanche Devereaux, and Estelle Getty as Sophia Petrillo, and was created by Susan Harris. It chronicles the lives of four elderly ladies who share a relationship and a house in Miami, each with their own unique characteristics, which the cast brilliantly brings to life. The program ran for seven seasons and was a critical and commercial success, with all four actors winning Emmy Awards for their performances.
“I can’t believe I’m the last one since I’m the oldest!” According to OK Magazine, White remarked when reflecting on the performance in January. “It was incredible to be in a room with four individuals who had such connection – I’ll never forget that first read. It seemed like we’d been working together for a long time! It still gives me the creeps when I think about it.”
While White believes Arthur wasn’t always fond of her excessively upbeat demeanor on set, she added: “It’s impossible to work that closely together without becoming a family. I’ve heard horror tales of shows where the characters don’t talk to each other off camera. How can you perform comedy if you can’t communicate with each other? … The Golden Girls’ last episode was a drenching affair. There were many tears.”
The Golden Girls’ legacy has been preserved via numerous tribute programs. Puppet parody performances featuring puppet versions of the characters reenacting fan favorite moments from the real series have been created by Australian author Thomas Duncan-Watt and producer Jonathan Rockefeller. That Golden Girls Production! A Puppet Parody, the most recent version of the show, is presently on tour, with tickets for the November performance now on sale.
Always Golden! On Tuesday, September 14 and Tuesday, September 21, A Celebration of the Golden Girls will be shown at select movie theaters. Fans may watch the iconic series on Hulu in the meanwhile. Visit Fathom Events’ official website for more information and to buy tickets for the show’s big screen celebration in September.
