The Suicide Squad, the latest DC film, features a major change to Polka-Dot Man’s origin story. As it turns out, he was not originally from Earth but came from another planet.
The suicide squad characters is a change that has been made to the character Polka-Dot Man.
Polka-Dot Man is one of James Gunn’s most unique and somewhat obscure characters, and he may well be the most intriguing. The character, played by David Dastalmachian in the film, hasn’t made many appearances in comic books since his debut in Detective Comics #300 in 1962, but when he has, he’s been a bit of a joke. Polka-Dot Man has been dubbed the “dumbest DC character of all time” by Gunn himself. However, in The Suicide Squad, the character finally receives his due, and in the process, the film makes significant alterations to his origin story.
Warning! There are spoilers for The Suicide Squad beyond this point. You should probably stop reading now if you haven’t watched the movie.
Abner Krill/Polka-Dot Man, also known as Mister Polka-Dot in the comics, is an early rogue of Batman. His background isn’t very interesting, but his gimmick is simple. Mister Polka-Dot wears a white outfit with colorful polka dots that, when removed off the suit, turn into weapons or escape methods. Krill would also rig his dots with self-destruct mechanisms so that no one else could utilize or examine them since his gimmick is technology-based. Not only is his whole scheme a farce, but it’s also very costly, implying that he isn’t always able to keep up his nefarious activities.
Gunn gives Krill a real background and reinvents his “gimmick” in The Suicide Squad. While Krill does wear a white outfit with multicolored polka patterns in the film, the parallels stop there. Polka-Dot Man really produces his polka dots in his body, as a consequence of his mother’s research. Krill’s mother, a scientist at S.T.A.R. Labs, exploited him and his siblings as test subjects in order to give them abilities and transform them into superheroes. Krill, in particular, was afflicted with an inter-dimensional virus that would disfigure him and eventually physically eat him alive if he doesn’t expel the dots twice a day.
As if possessing these terrible and strange abilities as a consequence of his mother’s abuse wasn’t enough, Krill is also suffering with PTSD and trauma from his upbringing. Some of Krill’s siblings did not survive their mother’s horrifying experiments. Polka-Dot Man is a profoundly unhappy and miserable person when we first meet him in The Suicide Squad, and he relishes the prospect of dying on Task Force X’s mission. However, at the end, he has not only found his position, but also gets a glimpse of himself as a hero before succumbing to his fate. Dastmalchian has already talked about his trip.
“I can tell you that my character Abner has spent his life in a lot of agony, a lot of humiliation, and a lot of isolation because of a disease he has,” Dastmalchian added. “That condition was something he thought at some point in time would be best suited to hurting other people, or at the very least committing crimes, in order to exact revenge against a harsh and unjust world. Things haven’t gone well in Abner’s life from day one, so when we meet him in this tale, he’s someone who has never been a part of anything, so he’s maybe discovered one of the first times in his life where he’s a part of anything among a group of very damaged misfits and criminals.”
The Suicide Squad is now in cinemas and available on HBO Max.
